Model yachts were being sailed in the U.K. in the early 1800’s, so it is not a new sport.
The London Model Yacht Club was founded in 1826 and an early Australian club was formed in Hobart in 1898.
The first Model Yachts came to Canberra in 1968 and the Canberra Model Yacht Club was formed soon after. The venue then was Nerang Pool near the city. With the advent of Radio Control other sites were tried and the present site at Bowen Park on the Kingston Foreshore proved most favourable,The CMYC was given permission to sail there and the small jetty was built specifically for the club’s needs.
The club meets every Sunday, weather permitting, at 10:30am. Racing starts at 11:00 and continues through until about 4:00pm.
There are five International classes of yachts sailed within the CMYC.
They are:
A’s, 10R’s and Marblehead’s being the most popular classes within the CMYC
The club holds handicap races for all classes most Sundays and some other competitions during the year.
Boats can be purchased new or second hand and there is always someone within the Club willing to give advice on whether the boat is considered a good buy. The Australian Radio Yachting Association has a ‘For Sale’ section on their web site and boats are advertised Nationwide. There are occasionally boats for sale within the CMYC.
Boats have become lighter and faster over the years, however their performance relies entirely on the sailor.
